Emilly Prado and Inara Verzemnieks on Journalism and Representation

Emilly Prado was one of three Oregon writers awarded Emerging Journalists, Community Stories fellowships by Oregon Humanities in 2018.

During this fellowship, each of these journalists worked on a longform story under the mentorship of a Pulitzer Prize–finalist journalist.

Prado's project, "More than Words," explores the stories of three families in the small rural community of Nyssa, Oregon, and how immigration policy changes have affected their lives.

Her mentor for this project was Inara Verzemnieks, a former feature writer for the Oregonian who now teaches nonfiction writing at the University of Iowa.

In this interview, I talked with Prado and Verzemnieks about Prado's reporting project and questions of representation and responsibility in writing about immigration.
