          Vril Society

          Fictitious German secret society

The Vril Society was a fictitious secret society that is said to have existed in Germany in the early to mid-twentieth century.

In a series of conspiracy theory and pseudohistorical texts claim that it was involved in the rise of Nazism and used supernatural energies to develop innovative flying machines during the Nazi era or "Reichsflugscheiben". There is no historical evidence for the existence of a secret society of this name and the achievements attributed to it.

Likewise, there is no evidence for the historical significance attributed by representatives of this legend to the "Vril Society" and some actually existing occult groups.

          Background

The novel The Coming Race and the term Vril

The word Vril comes from the novel The Coming Race published in 1871 by the English writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803–1873) and was probably derived from the Latin word virilis (manly', 'powerful').[1][2]
